about

‘Yaad N Abraad’ is the new reggae riddim release from Australian producer Monkey Marc, coming out on Digikillaz.

It features an exciting line-up of reggae revival artists from Kingston, Jamaica, including Dre Island, 5 Star, Iba MaHr, Aza Lineage and Earth and the Fullness.

Monkey Marc brought together the artists on ’Yaad N Abraad’ to create a riddim with strong social and political messages. Alongside the idyllic vision of island life often pictured from the outside, Jamaica is racked by widespread poverty, corruption and violence, where “blood still a flow just like the River Nile” (Dre Island - Yaad N Abraad). It has endured decades of crippling foreign debt, austerity measures and economic policies that destroy opportunities for the poor and protect the wealthy elite.

Monkey Marc says, “I aimed to capture a potent moment in time in Jamaica, by bringing together some of the most exciting talent coming out of the new wave of roots revival and sharing the stories and experiences of these young artists.”

This record continues in the tradition of reggae music from Bob Marley onwards, highlighting society’s struggles in a raw and poignant way, but also giving hope to listeners. Dre Island sings, “Physically, mentally you affi strong. Can’t weak heart when you out inna Babylon.” Aza Lineage sings, "Di youths dem haffi rize, dem haffi prosper".

Monkey Marc says, “This record shows both the darkness and the joy in Jamaica. It shows the deep spirituality that drives many of these young artists, and their passion and determination to succeed. The message from these young artists is: conquer your mind and uplift your soul, and don't stop fighting. Hopefully this record will uplift them and their communities in their journey to success, in yard and abroad.”

This riddim release is part of Monkey Marc’s Vital Sound project. This project began with the No Surrender riddim, and continues in 2018 with 2 more riddim releases, an upcoming single on Glastonbury Festival’s Uncommon Records and the Vital Sound LP in October 2018.
